FAQs

Fostering

Fostering a horse from PGER is similar to an adoption. Although you pay no adoption fee, you assume the cost and responsibility of caring for the horse. i.e. feed, farrier, vet, worming etc. You must live within the Prince George area to foster a horse from PGER.  Foster families are given first option to adopt their foster horse. (payment plans can be arranged for foster families) However, if someone is interested in the fostered horse, you will need to allow us to arrange a viewing (at a time that is convenient for you of course).

You can expect us to call and arrange a time to come out and evaluate the horse about once every two months (this allows us to have current information on the horse for prospective owners). Should you decide you would no longer like to foster, the horse can be returned to PGER.

All horses from PGER are available for fostering unless otherwise stated on their adoption page.

*We do offer a trial period to ensure that we have made the right match (usually up to two weeks). This is different than fostering in that you are not required to allow other possible adoptive families to view the horse. You are responsible for any costs incurred due to injury etc. while that horse is in your care.

Our Guarantee

Any information we are given regarding a horse’s health is always disclosed to potential owners. Anything we learn first hand is also disclosed. Every horse from PGER is guaranteed to be free of serious health and soundness issues prior to purchase for thirty days past the date of purchase.

Terms & Conditions:

Should a horse be found to have a serious health or soundness issue that we have not already informed you of prior to purchase as determined by our veterinarian, PGER will purchase the horse back for the original adoption fee. (Cost for exam and transport back to PGER is at the owner’s expense.)

Adoption Procedures

Sometimes we receive an accurate history on a horse from the previous owner. We are then able to provide potential owners with all of that info, plus anything else we discover along the way. Many times we are not so fortunate and have minimal history to go on. In those cases, we work with the horse as if it has had no training. We start from the beginning and go from there! Each new horse is put through a variety of “temperament tests”. This enables us to assess each horse’s personality and training level. This also helps to eliminate any surprises for new owners.

SAFETY IS OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE!

Unfortunately many horses come to PGER in desperate need of basic care. They come to us from thin to completely emaciated. Their feet are far too long, coats filthy, full of lice etc. These horses are immediately placed on a healthy diet. They are started on a regular worming program. Vaccinations are administered. Each horse is assessed by our farrier Rene Theroux. They are then trimmed and/or shod accordingly. Any horses in need of veterinary care are seen by either Dr. Murdoch or Dr. Green and the wonderful staff at Murdoch Veterinary Clinic.

ADOPTION POLICIES:

Adoption fees for rescue horses are kept below current market value for a reason. This enables us to place these horses into approved homes quicker and cover the cost of each horse’s care. This also keeps spaces available as we don’t always know when we will have a horse coming in or how many. Unfortunately we have limited space and we are not funded.

Adopting a horse from PGER is not about getting a cheap horse! A lot of these horses come to us with some issue or another. They need time, patience and understanding. A potential owner must be prepared to work with the horse to overcome any behavior issues it may have and also be prepared to meet any additional physical needs.

These horses need loving, caring owners for the long term!

Although we are not always able to perform a property inspection prior to approving an adoption, you can expect to at least receive an informal interview by phone and/or in person. You may be required to provide a reference. Concluding that, you may set up an appointment to come to PGER to view, cuddle, and ride the horse(s) of your choice. You can set up as many appointments as you need to help make your decision. We will do our best to insure that you are making the most suitable match for yourself and for the horse.

When you adopt a horse from PGER you must agree that under no circumstances can the horse be sent to auction for any reason.

You will be required to sign a contract agreeing to such.

We love feedback! If you already own a horse from PGER and want to give us an update, or would just like to comment we would love to hear from you.
